WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

My friend: Dude, I need your counsel. It just amazes me. People I’ve known for years and helped… hating on me so hard!

My response: Man, family and “friends” can b THE BIGGEST haters of all, cuz they feel like they know u… In their minds they put u in a box… And, when they see u tryinna take things to a new level, they think, “What the fuck! Who told Joseph he could step outside his box!? …veer outside my comfort zone for him!!!???? Doesn’t he know he got limits? Lemme put that nigga in his place… Take him down a notch.”

It’s up to u to say… Friend/ family member… I love u. But u can go kick fuckin rocks. I got amazing shit to do.

They desperately need u to stay put… To stay in that predictable, limited, zone. Because they need to convince themselves that their present condition is unavoidable…inevitable… If u transcend and do greater and greater things, it forces them to acknowledge their own unrealized potential… And people hate that shit!

Notice, muthafuckas who are on their shit… Like REALLY on it… They will never try to take u down. Why? Cuz they’re not threatened by u. They know that ur success won’t take nothin away from them. All forms of hate are born of fear. The haters fear u… They fear the God in u.

Don’t let them distract u or steal even one ounce of ur focus/momentum. Consider them background noise. Every successful man on the planet has a hater following. And it only gets bigger, the further u progress. After all… haters are just fans in denial. Lol

Dr. Dadamo’s Blood Type Diet rocked my dietary world. lol

I despise the whole idea of a “fad diet”, and I must confess that – prior to trying this one out for myself – I had placed Dadamo’s Blood Type Diet into that very category. Most of mainstream medical science scoffs at the very theory behind his work. To make matters worse, many of my trusted holistic “mentors” don’t seem to care much for him either. So why should you care… because IT WORKS! At least… it worked for me.

Many of the people who take issue with Dr. Dadamo’s methods fail to cite any proven negative results of following his diet. They can only bash his theories… and that’s with more theories of their own. At the end of the day, my only question is, “does it work?”. When making a substantial dietary change of any kind, I simply observe 3 things:

1) My energy levels: Do I feel energized or drained as a result of the diet? How am I sleeping? Am I more or less alert?

2) My SKIN: Your skin is the largest eliminator of waste. If things ain’t workin right on the inside, then you can believe it will show on the outside in the form of breakouts, puffiness, and dullness. If I’m testing a dietary change long enough, I’ll even observe my hairgrowth. Eating better, long term, always makes your hair grow better. And, usually, other people will notice before you do.

3) DIGESTION: Does the dietary change result in upset stomach. Frequent upset stomach may not necessarily mean that your entire diet sucks, but it is a strong indication that your diet is missing something (usually enzymes, fermented, and/or raw foods). Or… it can be that you’ve introduced a food that is wreaking havoc on your digestive processes.

A lot of us have learned to accept bad skin, fatigue, head aches, stomach aches, and other random pains as natural. But it doesn’t have to be so.

By simply removing fast food and switching to a diet full of more nutrient dense cooked and raw whole foods, I was able to make substantial gains in my health – cured my acne and my allergies. That extra bit of leanness still eluded me, though. And I was still suffering from chronic insomnia (a major problem of mine for YEARS).

My benefits from Dr. Dadamo’s Blood Type Diet:

1) Got leaner, but in a healthy non-skelator looking way. lol

2) My skin is even clearer and my hair is all shiny

3) MY INSOMNIA IS GONE!!!!! … This is the biggest bonus for me. NOTHING else has worked in the past. Yet, ever since I’ve implemented Dr. Dadamo’s rules for my blood type (abstaining from the “avoids” and eating lots of the “beneficial” for Type O), I can sleep at night.

A couple cons to the book:

1) It’s old. The copyright is like 1996 or something. BUT his website (http://www.dadamo.com) offers updated info.

2) For blood type O’s, they suggest a calcium supplement, since we can’t eat dairy. However, I think that bone broth would be a MUCH better recommendation. If you don’t know what bone broth is, read this http://www.westonaprice.org/food-features/515-broth-is-beautiful.html

3) They suggest eating nuts and seeds, but don’t mention the importance of soaking or sprouting (aids GREATLY in digestion)

Other than that, I give it my endorsement. If you’re curious, give it a try. Let me know how it works for you, or how it has worked for you(if you’ve tried it already).

Till next time… PEACE,

Eric

Recently, I received the email below from a fan on Facebook. Now, if this email was the ONLY one of this nature to be sent to me, I could just brush it off. However, in the past year, I’ve received many like it… all from young, male, Christian, aspiring singers, who view me as a role model. So I felt the issue was worth addressing.

I didn’t think that this needed to be said, but since some people insist on being dense… The “promo” in this video is fake; it’s A JOKE, as is my whole SCRIPTED monologue about it being “classy and sophisticated”. The video is meant to be sarcastic, ironic, and satirical. I have not become a porn star, lol.

*(I’ve omitted his name, in order to protect his privacy)

His email:

“Hi Eric
Hope everyfin is all well and good… Before I ask my question I would jus say dat I rly appreciate ur work so ders no hate here…. But answer honesty… Do u believe dat to some extent u use sex or ur body, sexuality , sex appeal to gain more fans, dat it becomes less bwt ur voice but more bwt U….now. I know ur songz aren’t all bwt sex if any r… But I know ur pics r quite seductive…. I love u man so dis isn’t hate plz dnt fink dat”

First of all, I don’t perceive any of what he says as “hating” or malicious. Undoubtedly, the entertainment industry is VERY image/marketing focused. However… Talent is still required; A strong work ethic, even more so… I believe this. And still, I know – better than many – that how you look definitely matters.
Lemme tell you a lil’ story (I’ll try to keep it short, lol). During my Junior year of college, I had the opportunity to perform at a showcase in ATL. To be totally honest, I was AMAZING (so humble, I know. lol). But seriously, it was one of those fantastic moments when you know – without anyone else having to affirm it – that you delivered an awesome performance. I was beaming with pride, as a crowd of smiling faces approached me to sign autographs; It was exciting.

Me (far left); I was told that I was too fat and had bad skin

There was an A&R rep from a major record label who was there. In front of everyone he loudly proclaimed my singing to be “masterful”. “Outstanding vocal performance,” he said, smiling broadly. Then he sobered, his expression flattened… “But this is the problem,” he said. “I can’t do anything with you; Not with you looking like this.” I was startled by the bluntness of his words. Clearly I had misheard him, right? I mean, he was just complimenting me a second earlier. But he continued, forcing me to acknowledge the reality of what was transpiring. “Who’s hot right now? Usher… Omarion.” Then, gesturing toward my stomach with his finger and making criss-cross motions, he said, “There need to be cuts all up in here.” The crowd around me had grown tense by this point. Some people walked away; the situation had become awkward, as he loudly criticized my physical appearance. Yet, he didn’t relent. Grabbing me by the chin and grimacing at the blemishes on my skin, he said “You might have a good face, but I can’t do anything with you… you’re fat.”
I didn’t cry… but, you know that burning feeling in the back of your eyes? …When you feel the tears pressing against your ducts? I definitely felt that. In fact, my eyes literally hurt, from forcefully holding back the salty liquid evidence of my demolished sense of confidence. I remember it so clearly. That moment changed my life.
You see, before then, I had allowed myself to embrace the belief that all my hard work and effort to develop my voice would be enough to yield a successful career. This idea that my vocal ability and songwriting talent could be acknowledged as on par with professionals, and still I would be denied access into the music industry, based solely on my looks… it crushed me. I refused to let my stomach or my acne stand in my way. At that moment, I made a decision; I would lose weight and get my skin clear… no matter what!
I went on an extreme diet and lost 40lbs in a month… in two months, I had lost over 80lbs. I looked like a different person.

Me, on the right, just one year after the above pic

IMMEDIATELY… And I say this with no exaggeration, EVERY SINGLE PERSON that I knew (with rare exception) treated me differently. I’m not talking about just “industry” folks. No. I’m talkin’ everyday people. I believe that, while most people don’t like to think of themselves as being “superficial”, they undoubtedly (and perhaps subconsciously) make constant judgements based SOLELY on outward appearances. Losing so much weight in such a short amount of time made me even more aware of just how fucked up our society is. There was such a stark contrast: “220lbs Eric” never got the kind of smiles, encouragement, and attention that “160 lbs Eric” got. People spoke to me like I was suddenly smarter, more worthy of respect… more worthy of love. People just ASSUMED positive things about me… that I was confident… that I was talented… That I was nice… an interesting person. Suddenly, the idea that I could be a recording artist seemed real to people who doubted in the past. I received no more arguments – only support. They suddenly believed that I could be a singing sensation… Why? Because I looked the part, of course.
It was a confusing phase of my life. On the one hand, I relished the opportunity to finally be “that guy”… you know; the guy that got the girl; The popular guy. The kind of guy that I had always perceived my brothers to be, while I was left unnoticed on the sidelines… marginalized as “the smart one”, “the shy one”, “the fat one”, “the nerdy one”. On the other hand, I became deathly afraid. I had discovered just how amazingly and ridiculously superficial/judgmental this world is. “What’s gonna happen if I can’t maintain this?” I thought. I became obsessed with diet and working out; Not for my health… strictly for my image; it was my ticket in! Underneath the fat and the acne, I had the look! I, Eric Arceneaux, could be taken seriously.
I landed a manager, an agent, and two other deal offers, within that year. Even on occasions when my music would be criticized, brutally, people were still willing to work with me… Why? I had a marketable look.
So where am I now on this issue? I’m not gonna sugar coat it: People are idiots! Most people, anyway. The entertainment industry is merely a reflection of our society. So, the next time you decide to criticize the current state of things, take a moment to step off your soap box… dismount from your high horse… because, guess what? The industry has become what it is, based on YOUR responses to what they put out. Believe me, if it didn’t sell, if it didn’t make them money… they wouldn’t do it.
Even on Youtube, I receive praise and harsh critique all the time for how I look. Some say I’m handsome… beautiful, even… others are cruel. One guy, last week, sent me a looooong email, detailing all the reasons why he felt that I did not have the look for “show business”. So, now, I have to fight the inclination to be cynical. I acknowledge and accept the fact that most people, regardless of whether or not they want to admit it, are superficial. But I don’t let it rule me. In my early days of performing and even my early days on Youtube, I felt like I had to be “Sexy” or “Smooth”…”Suave”, lol. I look at those videos and performances now and laugh at myself… I looked like a fool. I was doing what I thought I had to do… and, to some degree, it worked. But, today, I’m all about being me.
More than image… more than talent… even more than strong work ethic… I have discovered that the secret to success is allowing yourself to express your authentic self, free of fears of judgment. It is in recognizing our uniqueness that we tap into our full power, our godliness. So… in my recent photoshoot (click here to see pics), I didn’t aim to be sexy… or to look like a star (whatever that means)… I was just me. Some people perceive me, being me, as sexy… And I’m cool with that. If you still think that “just me” is too sexy, then I’m sorry. Guess I’m just not the artist/vocal coach/ actor/ man for you. I’m a human being, with a sexual side. I’m not afraid of it; not afraid to express it, though – out of respect for myself and others – I do have limits.

“It’s impossible be authentic, while focusing on living up to the ever-changing expectations and standards of others; Happiness will forever be elusive.” My mom told me those words just yesterday – wise woman.

Mom and me (I was about 11yrs old)

It’s a lesson that I had already learned, painfully, on my own. But it was good to have it reinforced. Anytime we bind ourselves within the confines of someone else’s expectations, we rob ourselves of our power – the innate gift that is our authentic self. So, if I come off as sexy to you, so be it. If not, then so be it. I can’t control how others perceive me. But I can say that, from this point forward, I refuse to adjust myself for anyone else. It’s like one of my students used to tell me, “I just do me, and people clap.” lol …yeah… that’s gonna be my motto for the rest of the year. lol

Love y’all,

Eric

I travel a lot: I work with clients on Broadway in New York, Hip Hop artists in ATL, actors in L.A. …Not to mention the fact that I travel to perform, which requires me to be in even better physical condition. But it’s hard, when you’re traveling. Fast food restaurants are abundant; Organic farmer’s markets and Whole Foods… not so much. Below are just 3 of my favorite items to take on the road with me, to stay on track.

1) Matcha Green Tea: This stuff is AWESOME. It gives me energy, keeps my skin clear, and REALLY helps with keeping my stomach flat.

2) Dulse: Most people are turned off, when they hear the term “Seaweed”, but it’s VERY good for you. This is especially true for those who suffer with Thyroid conditions. Seaweed is your friend.

Buy it here http://www.marxfoods.com/dulse-whole-leaf

3) Raw Honey: DO NOT confuse this with “pure” honey or “natural” honey; it has to say RAW or UNpasturized. Its taste is delicious, and – despite what you may expect – it WON’T make you gain weight. Raw Honey is an extremely nutritious substitute for sugar. In my opinion it has a superior taste.

This was, without a doubt, the most comfortable I have EVER felt at a photo shoot in my entire life. Roy Cox is an incredible photographer who has shot fashion models, sports stars, tons of major recording artists, and even President Obama. Still, the dude is so down to earth. He makes the environment feel very comfortable, cracking jokes and talking about music (also a passion of his). Beyond being a stellar photographer… He’s been kind of a “modeling coach” to me, often even giving me advice on marketing my image… my own personal Tyra Banks – the guy version, lol. I feel like I’m really ready to show people who I am as a complete artist, not just as a vocalist. This is just one baby step in that direction. ”Mr. Nice Guy” is coming soon! Check out the lil trailer below. Love y’all, and thanks for the support!!!!

A student asked me today, “What are the 3 most influential/inspiring books that you have read, as a singer?”. …A great question that I don’t get asked often. I decided the answer was worth sharing:

1) Renee Fleming’s “The Inner Voice: The Making of a Singer”

In case you didn’t know, Renee Fleming is a BEAST… one of the best Classical Sopranos that America has ever known. Years ago, before reading her book, I assumed that she was simply naturally gifted. To read how UNTRUE that presumption was inspired me GREATLY, especially during a time in college when I really felt hopeless. I love that she allowed some of the mystery to be removed and pointed out blatantly just how much work goes into building a voice. It’s a “must-read” for any serious singer of any style, in my opinion.

2) William Vennard’s “Singing: The Mechanism and the Technic”

This book was most certainly NOT a joy to read, when I first bought it. lol. It was like GREEK to me!!! The great thing about this book, however, was that it made me painfully aware of how much I DIDN’T understand. There was a world of voice science that I was totally unaware of. This book served as motivation for me. I believed that, if I could decipher it, the wisdom of the vocal gods would be MINE… Well, I did eventually decipher it… no godly wisdom gained… but I definitely grew in my understanding.

3) Maestro David Jones’ http://voiceteacher.com/

Now, clearly, this is a website and NOT a book. However, David Jones’ articles changed my friggin’ vocal life! The man seeks truth, as opposed to blindly following traditional methods and ideologies – exposing harmful vocal techniques left and right, regardless of their popularity. He was also the first voice teacher I encountered who focused so much on the idea of training a PERSON, versus simply training a voice. Maestro Jones understands both the SCIENCE and the PSYCHOLOGY behind training singers. But, above everything, he understands that teaching is, in itself, an art. He’s an aspirational figure as well as an inspirational one.

“Lose It”
©2007 Eric Arceneaux

I gave you all you ever wanted
Cuz you were all I ever wanted
Had it all and let you flaunt it
‘cuz you were my girl
Never was too busy for you
Had all my time devoted to you
I still found it impossible to keep you as my girl

And after all that we’ve been through
I was faithful to you
After 13 years of smiles and tears
How could you do this
Gotta man up and be strong
Said I’ve got to move on
Though I still can’t believe
feel this rage filling me
I’m about to lose it

I… I… I’m about to…
I’m about to…
I’m gonna…
Lose it

Thought you were my one and only
Believing every lie you told me
never loved me for a moment
guess I know this now
While I was calling checking on you
he was right there kissing on you
can’t turn a hoe into a house wife
Guess I know this now

And after all that we’ve been through
I was faithful to you
After 13 years of smiles and tears
How could you do this
Gotta man up and be strong
Said I’ve got to move on
Though I still can’t believe
feel this rage filling me
I’m about to use it

I… I… I’m about to…
I’m about to…
I’m gonna…
Lose it

Hey, Hey
You know who you are
Hey, Hey
This song’s about you
Hey, Hey
You know who you are
You know who you are

See I was never one to be the jealous boyfriend
never worried ’bout you going out
but if I wanted to go out with my friends
suddenly it turns into a problem
it seems
you were just a conniving, lying
pretty face without no soul
If I had been a little bit wiser
I’d have known to kick you ass out long time ago
