My weight (160lbs) may be the same, but my muscle/fat ratio has definitely shifted over the past few months.

I’m NOT saying that the scale has no value at all. If you are significantly overweight, the scale may be a crucial tool for monitoring your health. However, these 5 points can give you even greater insight into your progress than the scale alone. If you notice improvements in any of the below categories, then you’re probably headed in the right direction:

1) Skin

Right track: Do people mistake you for being years younger than you actually are? Is your skin clear, with blemishes being a rare occurrence? This can be a sign that you’re giving your body food that it can actually use.

Wrong track: Your skin is an organ; in fact, it’s the biggest eliminator of waste for the human body. Frequent breakouts, rashes, “puffy”/swollen face, and dull complexion may be warning signs that your skin is struggling to detoxify a body overloaded by bad food.

My advice: Remove the excess sugar. Take out the fruit juice, grains, & flour-based foods (Yes, even the – media touted – Whole Grains, granola, pasta, bread, and crackers). Up your intake of healthy fats, like coconut oil, organic grass-fed butter, olive oil, and GREEN VEGETABLES.

2) Teeth

RIght track: Less cavities, this time around at your latest dentist visit? You’re probably doing something right…

Wrong track: Cavities may not be indicative of poor oral hygiene alone. There is an ever growing body of evidence to support that dental caries may in fact be the result of malnutrition. A diet lacking in fat soluble vitamins, phosphorus, and vitamins A & D, can lead to tooth demineralization. If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity, take that as a warning from your body. You may need more healthy animal proteins, healthy fats, and/or minerals in your diet. It can also mean that you’re ingesting too many nutrient-blocking foods: whole grains, caffeine, and sugar (these foods can make it difficult for your body to absorb calcium and other nutrients).

My advice: If tooth decay is a problem for you, check out this link, BEFORE getting that root canal. http://www.curetoothdecay.com/

3) Digestion

Right track: Are stomach aches a rare occurrence for you? Are you “regular”, without the aid of drugs and/or fiber powders? Sounds like your inner ecosystem is working well.

Wrong track: As a kid, stomach aches were a regular part of life. We always had a huge bottle of Pepto-Bismol in the pantry, ready to save the day. Looking back, I realize now that the stomach aches weren’t random or arbitrary occurrences. We caused them. Sugar is the NUMBER 1 enemy of healthy digestion, and we ate A LOT of it: cereal, cookies, candy, granola bars, pasta, bread, fruit juice, pasteurized milk, and soda. Frequent stomach aches, infrequent and/or painful bowel movements, acid reflux, and chronic indigestion are all signs that you’re on the WRONG track . Constipation is a sign that something is wrong. Poor digestion means that your body can’t properly break down the food you eat or absorb its nutrients. Also, the stuff that doesn’t come out of you, STAYS IN YOU and hardens over time, adding weight… GROSS… I know.

My advice: If digestive problems are common for you, I strongly recommend reading “Body Ecology” by Donna Gates http://bodyecology.com/aboutbed.php

4) Energy levels

Right track: Do you wake up feeling ready to seize the day? Are you someone who’s pleasant to be around at 9am? Being a “morning person” may be a sign of good health and an efficient metabolism.

Wrong track: Feeling tired all the time, regardless of how much sleep you’ve gotten, is very common. Foods that are high in sugar and unhealthy fats sap your energy; they offer a brief boost, followed by a sudden drop that leaves you feeling lethargic and unfocused. ”Brain fog”, muscle weakness, and even depression can all result from poor diet. Food fuels your muscles AND your brain. Also, lack of exercise disrupts our ability to handle stress, leading to chronic fatigue and weight gain.

My advice: Make exercise a priority. Working out 4-5 times a week, even if it’s just for 20mins per session, can make a remarkable difference in your overall quality of life.

5) breathing

Right track: Are you a quiet sleeper? Can you walk flights of stairs, without heaving for breath? GOOD. Oxygen is THE SINGLE most important nutrient of the body. You can go days without food/water… only minutes, without air.

Wrong track: Lung volume, ease of the breath, and frequency of breath have all been shown in studies to be strong predictors of disease and even life-span. sleep apnea, chronic snoring, and similar breathing disorders have become very common today. Thankfully, these disorders can be greatly improved or even eliminated, simply by losing weight. Daily breathing exercises can further improve your quality of life, by strengthening the muscles of your respiratory system.

My advice: Practice this exercise daily (video link below), to improve the strength and freedom of your diaphragm. It doesn’t matter whether or not you consider yourself a singer. The diaphragm is a muscle that we ALL have; it is weak for many of us, but we can make it strong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SeSL9WdVBo

Why White Tea?

Green tea, Black tea, and White tea all come from the same plant – Camellia Sinensis. Yet, it’s safe to say that Green tea has become the popular star of the trio. And with good reason. After all, Green Tea has a pile of studies documenting its worth. It’s been shown to boost metabolism, discourage the formation of cancer cells, and improve digestion (just to name a few benefits)… Heck, recent studies suggest that Green tea may even prevent cavities and gum disease. It’s all because of Catechins – powerful antioxidants found within tea. Believe it or not, despite Green tea’s popularity, the lesser known White tea technically has greater catechin content and could possibly be an even greater aid to health.

So why don’t we hear more about White tea? Well, for starters, it’s often much more expensive than it’s Green counterpart. Also, less studies have been done with White Tea. That means less documented evidence to confirm it’s value. What we know for sure: It’s high in antioxidants (much higher than Green or Black tea), has less caffeine than Green and Black tea, it’s anti-inflammatory (great for reducing “face puffiness”), proven to kill germs that cause gum disease, and it’s easily the most pleasant tasting tea (compared to green & black).

I actually credit White tea, in part, with the “de-puffing” of my face (which a surprisingly LARGE number of u have asked me about. lol).

Many people today are experiencing facial swelling, caused by all the inflammatory foods in their diet: Grains, Sugars, and Alcohols. But we can reduce the inflammation and restore balance.

If White Tea is too expensive for you, Green tea is an excellent alternative. I enjoy both teas and have experienced noticeable results adding Green and White teas to my regular diet; I just change it up based on what I’m in the mood for.

As for the Wakame; it’s a Sea Vegetable. Sea Veggies are great for cleansing the body and regulating the activity of the thyroid (super important for maintaining a healthy metabolism). Sea Vegetables are also highly anti-inflammatory.

So, add these two foods to your grocery list; get a flatter stomach and leaner FACE

*Special Notes: It’s important that your tea be ORGANIC, as tea is commonly grown in toxic soils. Also, you must drink it plain (no sugar or cream), in order to attain all the benefits. The only sweeteners I would recommend are Organic Stevia and/or Raw Honey - the thick opaque kind of honey (it’s thick like cake frosting, and should say “raw” on the container).

You can purchase these foods at any Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, or similar health food stores (there are even some larger mainstream grocery stores that offer White Tea).

It’s simple; the more thoroughly and efficiently you digest your food, the better you will look and feel! Here’s two tips that you can make permanent parts of your healthy arsenal:

1) 15mins before each meal, take 1-2 Tablespoons of Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (I mix it in a glass of water and drink it down). *I suggest trying Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

(Click here for an article about a woman who has had an ab-defining experience very similar to my own)

2) At the end of an especially big – or just plain unhealthy – meal, I drink a hot cup of Green Tea (no sugar added). I sometimes add some organic ginger root for spice and as an extra digestive aid.

*There are a variety of Green Teas that can be good. Just make sure that you choose an organic brand, as green tea is often grown in toxic soils full of fluoride and heavy metals.

For all the folks asking me for a good Green tea that you can order online (this one is also available at many Whole Foods stores)… I like the one pictured above, because it’s a mixture of Organic Matcha (my favorite) and Chinese green tea. The result is a potent green tea that’s not quite as heavy on the caffeine as Matcha, and it’s nowhere near as caffeine laden as coffee. You can CLICK HERE to order.

1) Meat + Green Veggies = Abdominal bliss

Meat proteins (Beef, Pork, Chicken, Eggs, Fish/Seafood) and green vegetables (Broccoli, Kale, Spinach, Brussel Sprouts, etc.) digest well together (I’ll talk more in depth about “food combining” in the future); This combination stabilizes blood sugar, and sends the signal to your body that it’s OK to let go of excess fat! Of course, the meat can NOT be fried or drenched in a sugary sauce/glaze (That means no BBQ… sorry). HOWEVER, you can grill it, sautée it, bake it, and season the hell out of it! Ideally, you’ll want your meat to be of the highest quality: Beef should be from grass-fed cows, Chicken and eggs from cage-free hens, Pork should be cured, and Fish/Seafood should be wild caught.

2) STOP EATING grains!

Whole Grains aren’t really as “wholesome” as the marketers would have you think. Granola, Cereals, and Breads that have the “Whole Grain” monicker, give many a very FALSE sense of satisfaction in believing they are doing something good for their bodies. ”Whole Grain” breads, pastas, and granolas are what I refer to as “Faux Health Foods”. Commercial food industries push them as weight loss aids and heart healthy alternatives to meat. The truth is, very simply, they are a problem – NOT a solution. Want to hold on to those love handles? Then hold on to Whole Grains. Want a trim, slim, waistline? Then learn to enjoy fresh veggies (cooked, raw, sea, and fermented) instead of bread.

3) The truth: “One time” counts!

In times of shameless gorging on unhealthy treats, many of us pacify ourselves with the classic line, “It’s just this one time…” and “One time doesn’t make you fat.” Unfortunately, “one time” often turns into SEVERAL times within the span of a week or a month. Also, the idea that “one time doesn’t count” simply isn’t true. One time of eating that cupcake, one time of eating that pizza, one time of drinking that EXTRA shot of Patron can impair your metabolism and/or digestion for as long as SIX MONTHS. Sugars and starchy simple carbs wreak havoc on your digestion and blood sugar levels (both are VERY important for eliminating waste and fat). ”One time” of eating that pasta dish or drinking that soda can inhibit your body’s ability to assimilate nutrients, even from healthy foods. Most people can’t digest even nutritious proteins and carbs that well, because they have rendered themselves insulin resistant (basically meaning your body doesn’t process and break down the food efficiently, resulting in excess weight).

Rebalancing your blood sugar levels and restoring your insulin sensitivity can be done in about 2 weeks (Phase 1 – click here). Candida, a yeast overgrowth in the intestines that affects 75% of americans, can take as long as 3months to get rid of. This is precisely why I recommend a “Cleanse Phase” (again, click here for Phase 1) for all those who seek better health. Your cleanse can last 2 weeks or 3months, but it has to be followed by PERMANENT lifestyle/dietary changes. Bottom line: Cleanse first, and then… Make your “One Time” only ONCE per week. Most of the people I work with learn to institute a “cheat day” into their lifestyles. A cheat day is one day per week in which u can eat what you want, GUILT-FREE; the cravings get quenched, and you can minimize the damage to your metabolism. In fact, one (and I mean just ONE) cheat day per week has been shown in some studies to greatly aid in fat loss.

Try it: Test these tips out for 2 weeks, and watch/feel the magic happen. You may just get hooked

For the next 2 weeks, you are to adhere strictly to the above regimen. Remember, we’re strategically using the body’s fat hormones and blood sugar levels to our advantage; this WILL WORK… just DON’T CHEAT.

*Tag me in Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pics @EricArceneaux #FitnessChallenge

Phase 2 Foods - New Exceptions (the foods listed below are allowed ONLY on “Phase 2 food” days)

Raw Honey (It must be “Raw”, NOT “pure” or “natural”) *True raw honey is thick and opaque, not translucent and syrupy

Maple syrup (preferably organic… definitely NOT hard to find)

Peanut butter (organic and SUGAR FREE. You can sweeten it using Raw Honey or Maple Syrup, if you choose)

Fruits – *preferably fibrous & sour fruits* Apples, pears, oranges, blueberries, prunes, Tomatoes, etc. bananas *limit bananas, dates, and grapes to one serving per “Phase 2 food” day

Seeds/Nuts (preferably soaked and/or sprouted) – Pumpkin seeds, Walnuts, Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Chia seeds, flax seeds

Yams/Sweet Potatoes

red skin potatoes (preferably, this will be eaten in place of meat)

Lentils/ Beans (preferably sprouted)

*Dairy products should always be WHOLE MILK, Raw (when possible – as with Cheese), and preferably non-homogenized. Basically, the LESS processed the better!

Raw Milk Cheese (YES, it MUST be raw. Why? Because, it is MUCH easier to digest and won’t undo all the work we’ve done so far).

Whole Milk FULL FAT yogurt (preferably from Grass-fed cows) *no sugar allowed in the yogurt; BUY PLAIN. But you can add the fruit of your choice and even drizzle some organic maple syrup on top.

Kefir

Coconut water (UNpasteurized a.k.a. RAW) – You will find this in a refrigerated section of Whole Foods or other health food stores. If it’s not in a refrigerated section of the store, it IS NOT raw. By law, the only way coconut water can be left out in the open is if it is pasteurized, and we don’t want pasteurized anything (kills the nutrients and makes it harder to digest).

What you still CAN’T eat:

ALCOHOL
Sugar (this includes Agave nectar & brown sugar)
artificial sweeteners (Splenda, Sucralose, etc).
Soda
Candy

Feel free to substitute any protein or veggie with one of your choosing from the “What you CAN eat” list. Also, feel free to use the seasonings of your choice. Of course, it is ideal that your seasonings be organic and non-irradiated, but it is not required. Sea salt, paprika, turmeric, oregano, and pretty much any other seasoning you can think of are allowed. I’m a simple guy, with very simple tastes, when it comes to my food. But feel free to use your imagination.

For 2 weeks, you are to adhere strictly to the “What you CAN eat” foods (Check out the Meal Plan HERE). The diet is simple, but it really can be VERY delicious. It is definitely ideal to go Organic with your meat, veggies, and – yes – even your seasonings. However, do the best you can. Don’t “throw the baby out with the bath water” and dismiss it all, just because u can’t find or afford organic foods. Steering away from the “CAN’T” foods, alone, will yield some noticeable results

*Tag me in Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook pics @EricArceneaux #FitnessChallenge

ALCOHOL
Sugar (this includes natural sugars like Agave nectar, Raw honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, etc.)
artificial sweeteners (Splenda, Sucralose, etc).
Grains (includes corn and grits)
Rice
Oats
Breads (this includes croutons & crackers)
Fried foods
Fruit
Fruit juice
Corn
Soy
Tomatoes
Pastas
Peanut Butter
Whole Grains of any kind (includes cereals, breads, granola)
White potatoes
Yams/Sweet potatoes
Soda
Candy

What you CAN eat:

Beef (preferably Grass-fed beef)
Chicken (Do not fear dark meat or chicken skin; they are allowed)
Eggs (EAT THE YOLKS)
Seafood (includes crab, Lobster, mussels, shrimp, crayfish, etc).
Pork (ideally, this should be “cured”, as uncured pork has been proven to create harmful blood and digestive reactions in some people)
Dark Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Chard, Mustard greens, etc)
Broccoli
Asparagus
Onions
Peppers
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (mix one tablespoon with water for a tangy drink or mix with olive oil for an easy salad dressing)
Coconut oil (strongly recommend that it is Organic and non-gmo; not hard to find)
Olive oil

Acceptable in-between meal snacks:

Seeds/nuts (preferably soaked/sprouted): eat these alone or with a sour fruit
Tea (preferably organic) : Green (especially good for weight loss and digestion), White, black. Feel free to add fresh juice or wedges from lemons, limes, or pomegranates. Some teas come prepared this way already. Adding ginger root can also greatly aid digestion.

Exceptions:

*These foods are exceptions to the dairy, grain, sugar, and fruit rules

Stevia
Butter
Whey Protein Concentrate
Quinoa, Millet, Amaranth (When you choose to have one of these grains in your meail, they must be used as a replacement for meat; they do not digest properly when eaten with meat.)
red skin potatoes (must replace meat in that meal)
lemons
limes
granny smith apples (the green ones)
pomegranate
Avocado

What you SHOULD eat

- these are foods that are often overlooked, but can STRONGLY aid weight loss (as well as healthy weight gain in the underweight) and improve digestion and overall health.

Fermented Foods: Kimchi, Sauerkraut, pickles
*Check label to make sure that living enzymes are present.

Sea vegetables: Dulse is my favorite, but there are many.

Whey Protein Concetrate: It must be Organic and made from RAW (unpasteurized) milk. (this is good for weight loss and weight gain, as it simply provides your body with the nourishment needed for natural balance)

Ginger root can be added to food and drinks; greatly aids metabolism.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that – at some point in your life – I’ve helped you improve the health and strength of your voice. Now, I’m ready to help you improve the health and strength of your body. NOTHING TO BUY. I’m not selling anything. No tricks or gimmicks. This is free advice. Why? Cuz I’m passionate about helping people live. And, personally, I’m tired… just tired of seeing friends, family, loved ones suffering needlessly with conditions and ailments that are PREVENTABLE!

You probably already know my story… it may be your story, too. I was the “fat kid”, the “chubby/ stocky teen”, and finally the “overweight-at-risk-adult”. I didn’t want to be overweight. I had tried to lose the lbs before, and I was occasionally successful… temporarily successful. Throughout this journey, I have pretty much tried some of everything: I restricted my portions, I counted calories, I shunned carbs, I went vegan, I went paleo (a major relief after “going vegan”), I ate raw, and I worked out at the gym like a mad man. These attempts just left me hungry, grumpy, and sleepy (I know; it sounds like I’m naming the 7 Dwarves. lol). I was frustrated beyond comprehension by the overwhelming amounts of confusing, contradictory, and just plain erroneous weight loss and health advice out there. But, eventually I learned some things that changed the game for me ENTIRELY:

1) I learned that medical doctors are taught VERY little about nutrition. I had always assumed that it was an integral part of their education; I was wrong. So, if I had been wiser, I could have spared myself the advice of well-intentioned – but truly ignorant – medical professionals.

2) The food pyramid is a joke. What has been taught as “proper nutrition” in this country over the last decade is largely the result of faulty studies and food industry influence. Example: “Whole grains” and soy are incredibly overemphasized as “health foods” today, when – for many – they should be avoided COMPLETELY.

3) Your body is smarter than you are. If we learn to listen to our bodies, we can always rest assured that we are on the right path for each of us, as individuals. You have an internal compass; but, due to crappy eating, you may have lost “due north”. The good news: I believe that I can teach you to listen to your body again; we’ll take it step by step. These 5 components will ALWAYS let you know if you’re right (or wrong) track:

*we will delve deeper into these in the future.

a. Energy levels

b. Digestion

c. Skin

d. Weight

e. Teeth

f. Misc./random aches and pains

4) There is no “perfect diet” for everyone, because we are each unique. While there may be some unifying principles that we should all adhere to (refined sugar, for example, is pretty much bad for every living creature), we ultimately have to use what works best for each of us as individuals.

We are taught by the mainstream medical/scientific community that we, as laymen, are not capable of grasping the scope of knowledge needed to take our health into our own hands. This is NOT true. Ignorance, much like freedom, is a choice. I challenge you to renounce ignorance. It’s a shame that many of us know more intricate details about the life of a Kardashian than we do about what goes into our bodies. This is YOUR BODY that we’re talking about; you only get ONE. And this information is NOT beyond you. You can learn how to achieve your optimally healthy weight for life. I will help you.

Bryan Terrell Clark has managed the incredible feat of finding success on TV, radio, and the stage.

This Wednesday, September 5, 2012, Bryan Terrell Clark will be the guest mentor for my weekly workshop series.

What I love about Bryan is that he has found success in such a wide range of media: A featured actor on TV shows like CSI and House of Payne, songwriter for recording artists (most recently, Mary J. Blige – “Irreversible”), and as a vocalist alongside the likes of Michael Bublé, Ne-Yo, and Anita Baker (just to name a few). But it’s not his success, alone, that makes him such a worthy mentor; Bryan’s eagerness to share the lessons that he’s learned make him an inspiring teacher.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to get vocal and performance advice from someone who is actually “doing it” – enjoying a successful career in the entertainment industry. Opportunities like this don’t come around often; so don’t miss out.

Come in…

ask your questions…

GROW…

That’s what these workshops are all about. …That simple.
